Learn Who We Are

  • Dr. Jeanne Smith
    associate veterinarian

Dr Jeanne joined the BarburVet team in the spring of 2018. She received her bachelor's degree at Pacific University in Forest Grove, and her veterinary degree at Oregon State University. Go Beavs! Since graduating in 2009 she has been working in the Portland area as a small animal veterinarian.

She loves working with dogs, cats, and pocket pets. She had many rats, gerbils, hamsters, reptiles and even a couple grass frogs as pets while she was growing up and through college. She even adopted a three legged stray rat from the Oregon Humane Society! She really appreciates the human-animal bond and considers every pet, no matter how small, an important part of the family. She loves every aspect of her job, but especially enjoys soft tissue surgery and dentistry.

She is a native Oregonian. Though she does enjoy traveling around the world, she wouldn't live anywhere else. Her home includes her husband, her two girls, her dog Virginia, her cat Curtis, and her daughter's Beta fish named Flower. In her free time she likes to hike and birdwatch, and she dabbles in photography.

  • Mav
    Veterinary Technical Team/CSR

Mav moved to Portland from Denver, Colorado in the winter of 2013 after completing her double undergrad at the University of Mississippi. She entered the veterinary field in 2019 upon completing the PCC Vet Assistant program and starting at BarburVet as a Patient Care Assistant.

At BarburVet, Mav enjoys helping in all areas, but especially loves pocket pets and exotics. Mav strives to connect with animals and help them feel understood. She aims to provide a fear-free experience to both patients and clients.

In her off time, Mav likes to volunteer at wildlife and rescue organizations, and especially loves working with large birds. At home, she likes to play video games, paint and read books aloud to her four cats and her yorkie, Rose.

  • Miranda
    Lead Certified Veterinary Technician

Miranda has come back to BarburVet but as Lead Certified Veterinary Technician. She is happy to join the BarburVet Team.

  • Dr.
    Alexandra McLaughry

Dr. Alexandra joined the BarburVet family in August 2012 as lead veterinarian. She purchased the practice in May 2014. She completed her undergraduate degree at University of Oregon and her veterinary degree at University College Dublin, in Ireland. Since graduating in 2003, she has treated many species of animals, from horses, llamas, and cows to birds, turtles, lizards as well as dogs and cats. She is happy to treat birds, pocket pets, reptiles and other exotics as well as dogs and cats. She enjoys educating clients about their critters! She enjoys dentistry and dermatology as well as addressing such common issues as osteoarthritis in the aging pet.

When she is not having fun at work she is riding her bike home to be with her young daughters, Fiona and Athena, and husband Stephen. Her furry family members are Gunnar (dachshund cross adopted from OHS), Lily a young Pyrenees mix as well as Beatrice and Bernice both long haired orange and white former barn cats. She also has a rescue bunny named Robin.

She loves all the opportunities for activities that Portland offers such as commuting to work on her bike, competitive track bike racing at the Alpenrose Velodrome or taking the girls and her dogs to Pendleton Park.
